Summer’s for surfin’... not scamming!
The scammers are having some “summer fun”… they recently stole over 50 million cell phone users’ info. That sucks.
This is BAD news for regular Paychecks all across Wisconsin. If hackers get access to your financial or personal info (passwords, birthday, phone number, etc.) then you could be up a creek without a paddle.
So, here’s Five Fast Facts on how to find out if your personal info has been compromised and protect yourself:
🔍👀Check up on your info - Start by checking websites that report if your email, social media account, or phone number was ever part of a data breach. Once you check, you can change passwords… and listen to some comfort music.
🔑🤔Change your passwords - After checking your info... you'll probably see an account and (hopefully old) password that was already breached! Make sure all passwords are recently updated, and use a password manager going forward. Here’s the top choices for 2021.
🔒🔢Secure your SSN - If your Social Security Number was hijacked then ask one of the credit bureaus like Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax to put a fraud alert on your account. This will make sure lenders perk up their ears and ask questions if someone tries to use your SSN.
💵🕵️♂️Keep watch on your bank accounts - Keep a close eye on your bank statements and jump on any sketchy activity. Banks have protections in place to refund fraudulent charges, if you tell them ASAP.
🗣️👮♂️Tell important government agencies - Report any fraud or scams to the Office of the Inspector General. Also, do yourself a favor and give the IRS a head’s up. Oh, and let the Federal Trade Commission know via identitytheft.gov. Lastly, file a police report. Some creditors or banks might ask for one. And if you have any leads, it could help authorities catch the identity thieves.
Bottom line: Identity fraud and scams are no joke! Make sure you stay safe online and be sure to share these tips with all your friends!
