A Bit Of Affordable Luxury In The Sky For Us Common Folks

Airplane seats have been uncomfortable since the invention of airplanes (at least if current seats are any indication). But now, airlines are finally saying, “What if people didn’t have to suffer?” Luxury flyers have always had great, cushy options, but what if you're not loaded like a drippy pop star? We've got good news for normies traveling long distances!

Here are Five Fast Facts on sleeping comfortably in the air:

  1. 🛏️ Down Under - Air New Zealand is blazing the trail, installing essentially bunk bed pods for long flights (which is every flight to or from New Zealand), starting at only about $500 per person THIS SUMMER!
  1. ✈️ Here At Home - United has a new setup, too, called a Relax Row, where three economy seats flatten into a lie-flat space using special leg rests that fold up to create an actually FLAT sleeping surface. Nighty-night!
  1. 🧸 Sleep Kit - Passengers will get a mattress pad, blankets, pillows, and even a kid-friendly travel kit with a plush toy (because nothing says luxury like a stuffed animal at 35,000 feet).
  1. 🥊 Location, Location, Location - These bed-like rows will sit between economy and premium economy, giving more people a chance to snag one (or fight over one).
  1. 🧘 Patience Required - United plans to launch this cozy upgrade starting in 2027 on long-haul flights. No pricing available yet, but ANZ is a United partner so it seems likely to be similar. 👀

🔥Bottom line: Long haul flights are finally becoming a little less terrible! While it’s not exactly first-class luxury, it’s a huge step up from trying to nap vertically while your neck does gymnastics. At least for those lucky few who can book them first, of course. Just don’t be the person who snores like a chainsaw, and for everyone's sake, don't get TOO comfortable with your travel partner just because you can actually get horizontal. Yeah, you know what we mean!

Would you pay $500 to lay down on a long haul flight?
