A New American Dream?

Remember when the American Dream meant getting a good job, climbing the corporate ladder while building a family, and having a nice house with a white picket fence before you retire? Well, a lot of people have a new American dream: making money while doing as little work as possible. There are lots of ways to attempt this, but truly effortless money is about as common as finding a unicorn delivering your Amazon packages. But let's get into it, shall we?

Here are Five Fast Facts on the new American Dream:

  1. 😞 Not Enough - Over 50% of all Americans (and 60% of Gen Z adults) say a regular full-time job alone won't get them to their financial goals. Apparently, "work hard and you'll get ahead" now comes with a billboard-sized asterisk.
  1. 📼 Hustle Up - About 25% of Americans already have a side hustle, and 44% of adults ages 18-28 earn money from sources outside a traditional job. Having one job is becoming as old-fashioned as owning a VCR rewinder.
  1. 🚗 If You've Got It... - Millions of people now earn extra money by renting out homes, cars, or other assets, showing that many Americans are looking for ways to make what they already own work harder than they do.
  1. 🤖 Digital Helper - AI is making it easier for people to create digital products, automate tasks, and build new income streams, fueling the growing interest in passive income. It's hard work to not have to work hard!
  1. ⚠️ Buyer Beware - Before you jump into the deep end yourself, you should know that passive income isn't usually as "passive" as social media makes it seem. The same AI that makes it easy to build new things also makes it easy for scammers to build new scams. The Better Business Bureau found that people who reported scams involving business or investment courses lost a median of over $1,300.

🔥Bottom line: More Americans are looking for passive income because traditional work is broken. Jobs are being replaced by AI, companies aren't loyal to workers, and promotions are rare. In fact, a recent survey by the New York Fed shows workers are less satisfied with their pay and promotion opportunities now than they've been since the Fed started asking the question back in 2014! If you want to get creative, go for it. Just make sure you know what you're getting into, or your new American dream could turn into more of a nightmare than your day job.
