About Wisconsin’s Grocery Affordability…

If you're like us, your wallet weeps on a daily basis, because LIFE. 😭 With paychecks feeling like shooting stars nowadays - awesome for two seconds and then gone - grocery prices over the last few years have been raging harder than a frat kegger. Still, while the grocery bill hasn't returned to pre-pandemic levels, the forces that pushed food prices through the roof aren't quite so pushy anymore. You wouldn't know it from the headlines, but there are a lot of groceries that cost less lately. Let's have a reality check!

‍

Here are Five Fast Facts on groceries that are actually more affordable now:

  1. 🍒 S-tart Celebrating - Did you know Wisconsin produces more cranberries than any other state (60% of the nation’s total!)? If you fancy that tart treat, there's good news: current prices are the lowest since 2020. Pucker up and enjoy!
  1. 🥚 It's Egg-citing - Remember the egg-flation craze not too long ago? It's definitely over now, with the August average of $2.27 per dozen, down 37% from the peak in March 2025. We're currently seeing the lowest annual average price since 2021.
  1. 🥓 Bacon, Get In My Belly - Nothing goes better with eggs than bacon, and it's a much less painful pairing now. In July, bacon averaged $6.58 per pound, down around 14% from a peak of $7.61 in 2022. Deliciousness!
  1. 🧈 Stick Around - Everything is better with butter, right? Good news: stick butter averaged $4.02 per pound in August, the fourth month in a row it cost less than a gallon of milk. That's the longest streak since early 2022.
  1. 🧀 Yes, Cheese - Obviously, we own cheese. Wisconsin produces a massive 25% of the nation's cheese, and more than double the types of any other state. The best news of all is that average cheese prices are at their lowest since the pandemic-related spike in 2022, meaning extra cheese is no longer considered a major financial flex.

🔥Bottom line: Some perspective to keep in mind: as prices go down, that's good for consumers, but not necessarily for those who produce these foods. The American economy is huge and complex, and there's almost always a flip side to everything. There's a balance to be had, and to paraphrase Yoda: prices are always in motion! Still, we'll take any pain relief we can get from grocery carts that have been meaner than a dairy cow that hasn't been milked since the Packers’ last Super Bowl appearance.
