Affordable Housing in PA: Not an Easy Fix

We have a realtor friend who always has the best stories. 🗣️ Some of her clients are real peaches. One client was so incredibly rude, but she handled it like a champ. All she had to do was show her some manors. 💪🏰

A manor would be pretty sweet, but for the average Pennsylvanian, those dream houses are staying in Dreamland. 😴 Let’s dive into PA’s housing issues and all the current causes.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on affordable housing in PA:

  1. 🥶 Priced Out Cold - PA may be adding jobs, but finding a place to live near them is becoming another challenge. With median home prices around $260,000 and wages struggling to keep up, many workers are getting priced out of the communities where new opportunities are opening up.
  1. 🏘️ Crippled By Cost - Housing costs in PA are climbing at the same time many homes are getting older and more expensive to maintain. State officials say over a million households are already spending more than 30% of their income on housing, AKA financial burden territory.
  1. 📉 The Big Short - Rising prices, climbing rents, and a projected shortage of 185,000 homes are expected to hit lower-income households and seniors especially hard. The state’s new housing plan is intended to expand affordable construction before the gap widens further.
  1. 💰 Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems - Housing leaders argued that simply adding funding may not fully solve affordability problems. Many communities already carrying large shares of affordable housing continue facing pressure, while other neighborhoods remain difficult to access for lower-income residents.
  1. 🛟 Support System - Housing instability is often tied to more than just money. Families facing eviction may also need legal guidance, housing navigation, or access to community services, which is why many modern housing programs now bundle those supports together.

🔥Bottom line: Unfortunately, there’s no easy fix to the housing cost crisis. With a bunch of factors in play, finding a solution will take some major move making. Have you heard about Hantavirus?
