Affordable Housing in Wisconsin? You Ain't Dreaming!

The days of selling your (or someone else’s) kidney on the black market to afford rent aren’t over, but things may change across the state in the near future. Gov. Evers has recently announced a $20M grant for affordable housing construction projects. Which means there will be new and affordable places to rent.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About The Affordable Housing Grant:

  1. 🏗🏠What is it? - The financing helps builders complete affordable multi-family housing developments that received federal or state housing tax credits in 2020 or 2021.
  2. 🏡🏘Do apartments count? - No. Buildings with more than four units are not considered multi family homes.
  3. 🤑👌Who says who gets what? - WHEDA will hand it out on a case-by-case basis. They expect to help around 1,8000 rental units all over the state.
  4. ✍✍Where’s it coming from? - The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). You might also know it as “Build Back Better.”
  5. 💸💰This means cheaper rent, right? - Well, the definition of “affordable” is vague, so there’s no way to tell what rent will cost or exactly when these units will be complete.

🔥Bottom line: The investment is smart and will easily supercharge the march toward more and affordable housing. But (and it’s a butt bigger than Aunt Martha’s) it doesn’t account for supply chain issues and the cost of lumber, but I’m probably telling you something you haven’t already figured out.
