How does the saying go? Sometimes you’re the wrecking ball…and sometimes you’re the building. Amazon has made an announcement about its new warehouse facilities outside of Omaha that isn’t going to make Nebraskans happy.
Here are Five Fast Facts on the Omaha Amazon warehouse delay:
- 🏢What’s The Dealio? Amazon has been working on three warehouse facilities around Omaha with hundreds of thousands of square feet combined. They were supposed to add over 1,000 jobs and over $200 million to the local economy. Yep, that would have been terrific!
- 📉😒The Delay - Construction is nearly done, but Amazon has announced it won’t open the Papillion facility until 2024. E-commerce has slowed recently, and that’s giving Amazon some heartburn. I can’t imagine the heartburn of local leaders who stuck their necks out to make this happen! 😱
- 🤔🤨There’s Hope! Amazon claims it still plans to open the warehouse, but just needs to tweak the timing. Let’s hope Amazon’s timing is a little swifter than Scott Frost’s.
- 💸The Big Picture - This is part of a bigger issue, as Amazon now has "too much space" after huge expansions over the last two years due to pandemic-driven online purchasing. Maybe Jeff should have spent more time on his business than his space joyride? Just sayin’.
- 🧾💼The Solution - In fact, Amazon is planning to sublet up to 30 million ft2 of its real estate around the country. And this is where the panic sets in…
🔥Bottom line: Amazon is saying all the right things, but it has to be an uncomfortable time for Omaha’s leaders. With that sublet news floating around, there’s no way to know what will happen until it happens. We hope things will come through, as this warehouse would be great for local Paychecks! If nothing else, maybe someone besides Amazon will move in. We’ll keep an eye on it for you.
