Americans Are Cashing In Investments to Spend

Where’s all the money for today’s spending coming from? 🤔🛍️ For a growing number of Americans, the answer is to tap their investment accounts. More people than ever are pulling cash out of stocks and funds to cover everyday life. 🤑

A strong market has left a lot of folks feeling flush, and they’re also feeling a little more comfy dipping into that extra padding. 💸🤠 Even if you’re nowhere near cashing out, this new spend trend is one to read up on.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on tapping investments to spend:

  1. 🛒 Checking Out - More Americans are now treating their investments like a checking account. In the three months through April 2026, about 8.2% of people moved money out of their investment accounts to spend it, up from roughly 4% in 2019.
  1. 💰 Daily Dollars - These cash-outs are also paying for a bigger slice of everyday life. Money pulled from investments now funds about 6.8% of all spending, nearly double its share back in 2019.
  2. 📈 Capital Gains - The reason behind the trend? The stock market has climbed for several years running, so people’s investment accounts are fatter than they used to be. When people feel richer on paper, they tend to spend some of those gains.
  1. 🎩 Top Shop - Among the highest-earning 10% of Americans, about 1 in 5 recently tapped their investments to spend. Among wealthy people 65 and older, more than a third did. Those earning less still tend to lean on their paychecks instead.
  1. 🫕 Chips & Dip - Spending your investment gains feels pretty great while the market is climbing. The danger shows up when stocks fall. Selling during a dip can lock in losses and drain your savings faster, a big worry for retirees who count on that money to last.

🔥Bottom line: Cashing in some investment gains isn’t a bad thing, and plenty of people are doing it while the market stays strong. The trouble starts when your everyday budget depends on stocks staying up, because markets don’t climb forever. Enjoy your gains, but keep a cash cushion so the next market dip doesn’t catch you off guard.
