Calling all future pilots and crew: for the first time in several decades, a high school aviation program could return to City Airport.
Here's Five Fast Facts …… :
- ❓🔎 There's an Airport Where? Detroit's far east side has been home to Coleman A. Young International Airport (AKA City Airport) since 1927 and was once the region's only international airport.
- 🧑✈️ And Now? - The airport saw its last commercial flight in 2000, and since then, it has only served private and business travelers. Many areas of the airport have become unusable, requiring lots of work to bring them up to code.
- 😎☀️ The Future - The future for the little airport is looking brighter for the first time in 20+ years, and they submitted a proposed "airport layout plan" detailing work to be done.
- 📚🔧 The High - The Aviation High School, once located at the airport, has since been relocated to Golightly Technical Center a few miles away. But it seems virtually everyone agrees that moving the program back to the airport is the way to go.
- 🟢🎌 Let’s Go! With $100 million in grants this plan would bring a new home for our city's future flight crews, and put lots of people to work. So far construction deets haven’t been released, but we’ll keep you posted!
🔥Bottom line: It sounds like good things are coming to City Airport – so pack your bag – pilots bag, crew bag, tool bag – whatever!
