Be Great, Not Just Good...Or Else!

Fantasy football can be a lot of fun to play - swapping players from week to week to try to get the absolute top level of performance out of your team is both a challenging puzzle and a great way to pass the time! When it comes to real jobs, though, being swapped out for a better player feels a whole lot less fun. If we were paid millions of dollars for getting benched, that would be one thing, but for most of us the reality of getting "benched" is a legit crisis. So why are companies starting to treat their workers more like a fantasy team?

Here are Five Fast Facts on workers getting strategically replaced:

  1. 😴 Do More With Less - Hiring in the US fell to just 3.1% in recent months - basically the job market's version of a snooze button, with only the pandemic and the Great Recession that low before.
  1. 🧑‍🎤 Rockstars Wanted - Recruiters say that 2025 was the most aggressive year they have seen in over two decades for this sneaky practice of replacing average workers with slightly higher priced rockstars instead of expanding teams.
  1. 👀 Not Too Rockstar, Though - On the other hand, sometimes even good employees get the boot simply because they cost too much, like a sports team with a salary cap. Companies have limited cash, so they may let a talented, expensive veteran go or replace them with cheaper, younger workers just looking for beer money.
  1. 👔 No Immunity - It's not just the worker bees, either. Roughly 11% of CEOs at the 1,500 largest public companies last year got the boot for failing to adapt to AI or a shakier global economy (though they got much bigger severances, naturally).
  1. 💪 Best Insurance - Recruiters say the best thing you can do is be an exceptional worker. In a wobbly economy where AI is expanding, no one is completely safe, but those who provide the most value to the company are in the best spot. Don't stop at good, go for great!

🔥Bottom line: Companies are choosing strategic swaps over simple growth - upgrade the roster, keep budgets tight, and let managers trim anyone who can't keep up. So, workers should treat every job like a tryout, keep sharpening their skills, and be proactive about doing their job the best they can.
