Bottoms Up: Michigan Restaurants Can Now Offer Self-Serving Alcohol

Of all the ridiculous bills to come out of the Michigan legislature, this one has us ready to celebrate. Let's take a look at the boozy deets.

Here's Five Fast Facts …… :

  1. 🧞 We let the genie out of the (wine) bottle - Let's be honest; a bunch of cans with a whole lot of worms were opened during the pandemic as businesses had to reinvent themselves to survive. Many restaurants started offering to-go boozy drinks to help wash away the despair we found ourselves in.
  2. 🥤 Belly up - Now, Senate Bill 656 will allow restaurants with on-site liquor licenses in Michigan to provide self-dispensing beer, wine, and mixed drink taps so that customers can pour their own drinks. Proceed with caution because this sounds particularly yummy. I mean dangerous.
  3. 🏋️ Get yo exercise - I do have some sour news for the laziest among us -- the dispensers will not be located on your table. Rather, you can enjoy a lovely "beer wall" somewhere centrally placed. Maybe where the salad bars used to be?
  4. ⚡ Buyer beware - This isn't an "all you can drink" situation. The dispensers are capped at 96 ounces per order. Each beer serving is restricted to 16oz, 12 oz of wine, or mixed drinks. There is no straight liquor option, so forget about taking shots right from the tap. Also, we're pretty sure keg-stand style acrobatics are also discouraged.
  5. 🥂 Refill, please! - To get the booze flowing, you'll be given a key card with your credit card number loaded on it. The key card would then have to be reactivated after every 32 ounces of beer, wine, or mixed drink you buy.

🔥Bottom line: Drink up, friends! This bill will hopefully free up servers' time and allow them to better serve… food. You know, to suck up all that booze.

Cheers!
