Bus Start! Madison’s Rapid Transit Line Gets a Green Light

Looks like Madison will get a rapid transit bus line that connects the east and west sides, getting people where they’re going faster and more efficiently.

Here’s Five Fast Facts about Madison’s Rapid Transit Bus Lines:

  1. 🚍 Wheels on the Bus - The new line will feature fewer stops and shorter commutes in dedicated lanes. Oh, and the buses are electric.
  2. 🚏 Go Round and Round - The line will run through downtown and the UW campus, starting at the East Towne Mall and ending at the West Towne Mall (and back and forth, forever and ever). Before you freak out, fares will be comparable to local bus routes.
  3. 🚎 Round and Round - Around 72% of the project will be paid for using $190M to $200M in federal grants. Local funding will make up for the rest.
  4. 🚐 Round and Round - It’s not without its critics. Downtown businesses aren’t happy about routes or stations on Capitol Square and state street. Others complain it’s taking away from “regular” bus routes.
  5. 🛞 Over the City Streets - Road work has already begun and bus station construction will begin in the spring.

🔥Bottom line: Anything that can help people without the necessary resources to get where they’re going while also cutting down commute time is a good thing. The business of it is a different thing altogether. Regardless, the money is there and it’s happening. Hopefully there’s not a prolonged battle and it can get up and running rapidly. See what I did there?
