Can We Please Bring Gas Prices Down Now??

News reports suggest a deal with Iran is close after months of conflict, which means the world may finally be getting a break from nonstop headlines that sound like they were straight out of a Tom Clancy novel. The US believes negotiations are close to ending the war and reopening important oil shipping routes, though there are still disagreements to be sorted out. In the meantime, gas prices still suck the life out of us at the pump.

Here are five Fast Facts on the latest with Iran:

  1. 🤏 Getting Close - Trump said the agreement with Iran is “largely negotiated,” suggesting that major parts of the deal are already worked out. That’s diplomatic-ese for, “We’ve argued for weeks and now everybody just wants to go home.”
  1. ⏳ Belaboring The Point - The conflict has lasted roughly 90 days, which is a very long time for the entire world to nervously refresh X while pretending they totally understand international politics.
  1. 🚢 Strait Up Disagree - One major issue in the talks involves reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global oil supplies, and by extension, oil prices around the world. In other words, the global economy really hates it when giant ships can’t get through.
  1. 💣 Bombs Away - Another big disagreement is what Iran does with its enriched uranium. Trump has said they won't get nukes on his watch, but Iran refuses to give in on this. Anyone else concerned about a country so desperate to attain the most destructive weapons in human history? Asking for a friend.
  1. 📰 Seesaw Effect - Oil prices lately can be traced very closely with headlines about the US-Iran conflict: good news means prices drop, bad news means prices spike. JUST MAKE IT STOP, ALREADY!

🔥Bottom line: The situation is cautiously hopeful - even Arab leaders in the region agree - and leaders on both sides are saying things that (hopefully) won't cause panic while gradually creeping closer to a deal. Success will calm oil markets right away, bringing down costs for all of us (unless you believe the Chicken Little EU, which says prices will remain high no matter what). Trump told his team not to rush the deal, and make sure it gets done right. But we'd sure love to see those oil prices come down soon, wouldn't we?

When do you think a deal will be reached?
