Central PA’s Billion-Dollar Bridge & Road Boost

What’s the deal with suspension bridges? 🌉 Why are they always hanging out? Maybe it’s because they have such a great support system. 🤗 We love to see it.

If you live in the middle of Pennsylvania, construction may be heading to a highway or bridge near you. 🚧 A billion bucks worth of funding is about to make the magic happen.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on PennDOT’s new investment in Central PA:

  1. 💰 Billions 4 Bridges - PennDOT and the Shapiro Administration are about to kick off a $1 billion infrastructure improvement initiative, focused on the center of the Keystone State. A total of 54 projects will get going during the 2025 construction season and 126 projects will continue in Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, and Schuylkill counties.
  1. 🛣️ Bonkers For Berks - Over $365 million will go to Berks county alone. Projects include upgrades to I-78, Route 61, Route 183, and several regional bridge replacements. Some of the 1-78 projects are over $100 million each.
  1. 👷🏽‍♂️ Fixer Upper - Notable projects in other counties include replacing the I-80 Bridge over the Lehigh River (Carbon County), replacing the Route 33 north and south bridges over Bushkill Creek (Northampton County), and reconstructing Route 309 at the Tilghman Street interchange (Lehigh County). Check out the full project list here!
  1. 📣 Loud and Proud - Since Gov. Shapiro took office, he’s been in his road improvement era. In the administration’s first two years, 12,921 miles of roadway were improved and progress was made on 1,172 state and local bridges. More brags: In 2023, PennDOT repaired more poor-condition bridges than any other state in the nation.
  2. 🚙 That’s My Jam - Wondering if construction will throw a wrench in your AM commute? Visit www.511PA.com to check out the latest traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, and traffic speed information. There’s also an app for both iPhone and Android.

🔥Bottom line: Sure, road construction can make us late for work, but so can a flat tire from a pothole. We’d rather take the heat from the boss man than spend our beer money on repairs. You know what else has been a little slow lately? Our internet. Wondering what happened to the government’s plans to give everyone high-speed broadband? Head here for an update.
