Charge Up, Kids! PA Gets Funding for Public EV Chargers

Charge me up, Scotty! 🔋 PA's getting Bookoo bucks to make the state more EV-friendly. Electric vehicles are so hot right now, and the Keystone State's adding more public charging stations. 🚗⚡

Pretty soon, you'll be able to plug in and grab more jolt juice as you're road tripping from Philly to Pittsburgh. Hey, you might even be able to make it to Ohio on one charge! 🤠

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the new funding:

  1. 🚘The EV Effect - Under Biden's new Infrastructure Law, $7.5 billion is going towards building more EV chargers nationwide. The included National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program (NEVI) mixes money from Uncle Sam with other funding from the US Department of Transportation to make the magic happen.
  2. 🔌Checks for Chargers - PA will get $171.5 million for EV charging projects over the next five years. PennDOT will also have $24.5 million in grants available.
  3. 🙃 Tesla Not Included - Today, PA has 2,800 chargers in 1,100 locations. This number doesn't include Tesla chargers because they aren't considered public chargers. Also, Tesla drivers aren't real people.
  4. 🛣️ Life Is A Highway - First order of business will be building out what's called Alternative Fuel Corridors, which are now being reviewed by the Federal Highway Commission. On the list are I-78, I-80, and the PA Turnpike Northeast Extension.
  5. 📋 The Fine Print - New chargers will need to be DC fast charging stations with four or more charging ports. The stations need to be within a mile of a highway and 50 miles from the next closest charging station.

🔥Bottom line: Whether you believe in climate change or you're more of a flat earther, it looks like the US is gearing up for an EV bonanza. Electric vehicles are on the rise in PA and across the country, but should you run out and buy one tomorrow? Probs not just yet. However, it's still a good idea to brush up on your EV knowledge to stay in the cool kids club.
