Check Yo'Self! Wegmans Kills Self-Checkout Due to Theft

Every party has a pooper. 🥳💩 And over at Wegmans, too many poopers ruined the self-checkout app party - and it really STINKS! 🛒

The northeastern supermarket giant decided to squash the app because they were experiencing sky-high shoplifting. They're going back to the drawing board to fix the bugs and keep the grocery pirates at bay.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on this recent decision:

  1. 📲 Roll Out - In 2019, Wegmans rolled out their SCAN mobile app that allowed customers to scan, bag, and pay for groceries while they shopped.
  2. 🛍️ Bag It Up - Wegmans and other grocery stores were inspired by Amazon's Go stores, where customers can use their "scan-and-go" app to skip the checkout line.
  3. 🏴‍☠️ Scam-and-Go - Top scan-and-go thefts including customers who intentionally do not scan items, or scanning cheaper items than what's in their carts.
  4. 📉 Taking the L - In a recent report, grocery stores with scan-and-go technology had losses that were 18% higher than stores with standard check outs.
  5. 🚫 Don't Touch Me - Scan-and-go apps are most popular among younger, tech-savvy shoppers. The apps blew up during the pandemic, since they cut down on close interactions with employees and other shoppers.

🔥Bottom line: With all the theft happening, Wegmans is smart to rethink their app and checkout process. While new tech can make lives easier, sometimes it makes things a little *too* easy, and people take advantage. Let's hope they fix the bugs so we can get back to a smooth, touchless shopping experience.
