The pandemic has claimed another victim: Minnesota’s Postal Service is now critically short of workers of all kinds, including carriers.
Here’s Five Fast Facts On Minnesota’s Mail Problem:
- 📮Letterboxed - USPS is seeing a shortage in postal employees in all positions. The reasons why should sound familiar: low pay and a strong job market. Why work for less when you can go elsewhere?
- ✉️Stamped Out - Some residents are getting mail deliveries only twice a week, while others are getting deliveries later than usual in the day.
- 📨That’s Fair - Post offices in the state are hosting job fairs and running a very strong push to hire, but no one is stepping up. That’s despite Congress passing a broad bill to make things easier for the service.
- 🧑💼Return to Sender - Our senators, Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar, have both sent letters (LMAO) to the Postmaster General reminding him of federal law, asking for a list of what zip codes have been hit with disruptions and when normal service will return.
- 🏤COD - Everyday citizens, postal unions and nonprofits are stepping up with a campaign called Save the Postal Service. It’s pushing the USPS to offer new revenue streams, including leasing parts of its buildings.
🔥Bottom line: Is there anything the pandemic hasn’t screwed up at this point? The postal service is one of the most important parts of American society. We depend on it every day. Some government wallets are going to need to be opened to fix this before it’s too late.
