When it comes to Paychecks, city-slickers have the gold and the folks out in the country just have… corn, amiright?
WRONG.
Well… kind of.
It turns out the story is a little more complicated than that. And it’s something we should all be thinking about before hanging up our muck boots.
So let’s see - should we all be running away from the fields and into the city?
Here’s the Five Fast Facts:
- 🐣🐔Who gives a cluck?- Over 65% of folks living in urban and rural areas say people in the OTHER types of communities don’t understand the problems their own communities face. While the urban vs rural divide was started in the 1930’s, it was particularly clear in the last election when –cities and suburbs voted Democratic, while rural areas voted Republican.
- 👶📈Who’s Gettin’ Busy? Over the past decade the urban population grew by 9% while the rural population only grew by 1%. It’s not just because Mary Jo spends all her time milking cows - it’s that there are more jobs available in the city. Whether the jobs are in the city because that’s where the people are or it’s the other way around is a chicken and egg question, but one thing is clear:cities are growing faster!
- 💵💰But who is winning? While urban folks are more likely to both have and make more money, rural folks tend to have better overall net worth. The key difference here is the cost of living between big cities and rural areas.
- ⚖️📏So what about the Paychecks? Over the past two years the average income for urban residents increased 6.4% to $62k/year. Average rural personal income increased by 7.6% to $46k/year. So, while rural folks have seen a higher percentage growth in their Paychecks, urban folks still have bigger Paychecks overall.
- ⌛🤔Will it get better, worse, or the same? Remote work is at an all time high and this is especially true for high-paying jobs where now 15% of $100K/year+ jobs are strictly online. However, most workers (60%) don’t have jobs that can be done from home. Also, Trade Careers are (sorta) making a comeback (finally!) This tends to offer equal opportunities for both city and country folks (aka people who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty) since most trade jobs are needed EVERYWHERE.
🔥Bottom line: For now, the Paychecks seem to favor urbanites, but rural Paychecks are growing faster. So don’t you or your kids run off to the city thinking it’s a clear Paycheck winner.?
