Interstate travel is about to get easier for us in the near future, thanks to a new train system that will connect cities in Minnesota, Illinois, and (finally) Wisconsin.
Here’s Five Fast Facts About the Twin Cities-Milwaukee-Chicago Intercity Rail Project:
- 🚆 The Power of Three - All three states have partnered with Amtrak for the $53M project. A DOT study shows that 59% of Wisconsinites live within 30 miles of a TCMC station or 15 miles of a connecting shuttle.
- 🚄 Headed North - This is a big deal for a lot of commuters and travelers, since rail service hasn’t ever really extended past Milwaukee. Considering the average driver spends 54 hours a year stuck in traffic, this is going to save a lot of people some time.
- 🚅 Buzzkill - There’s still a chance the project may get shut down. Former Governor Scott Walker killed a railway project between Madison and Milwaukee that relied on federal spending, effectively eliminating jobs and further commerce. And yet he greenlit Foxconn. The guy’s an economic genius.
- 🚉 Not There - There isn’t a stop scheduled for Madison, but shuttle service is a possibility (thanks, Walker).
- 🚂 Breaking Ground - Construction will begin next year and wrap up in 2025.
🔥Bottom line: The benefits of this project are incredible. Not only does it open up all sorts of travel possibilities, it also creates a ton of jobs and can give a boost to smaller communities. Plus, if you hate EVs but want to cut down on carbon emissions, here’s a way you can contribute.
