Consumer Spending Is Helping...For Now

Despite an overall feeling of being pretty darned broke, Americans are still spending like it’s an Olympic sport. That spending is propping up the economy even though inflation is throwing a wet blanket on everything. Prices are high, savings are low, and summer plans consist mostly of those awesome “stay-cations” that the kids really love.

Here are Five Fast Facts on consumer spending driving the economy:

  1. 📈 Up And Up - Consumer spending rose 0.5% in April, and leisure and hospitality added 70k jobs in May - about the strongest that sector has been over the past year.
  1. ⛽ Gas Pain - As we all know, gas prices climbed to a painful average of about $4.22 a gallon, up from $3 a gallon in December. It's a budget line item you can’t un-see, though fortunately it is coming back down now.
  1. ☹️ Eeyore Mood - Consumer sentiment fell 10% in May, to a record low of pure public grumpiness. Womp, womp.
  1. ☔ Need An Umbrella - The personal savings rate dropped to 2.6% in April, the lowest level in nearly four years. People aren’t saving for a rainy day so much as they’re just hoping desperately the storm never comes.
  1. 🤦 Not Again - Inflation was 3.8% in April, and credit card delinquencies for payments more than 90 days late has officially skyrocketed to a disastrous 15-year high.

🔥Bottom line: From an economic point of view, it's great that spending remains strong, but at some point the bill is coming due on an individual level. People are trying to stretch their paychecks by digging into savings, switching to home cooking, hunting for discounts, and using credit cards to cover the gap. It's a bit like playing a game of financial chicken, but raiding your life savings to purchase a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread is definitely a terrible long-term survival plan. Here's hoping for a positive turn sooner rather than later!
