Buckle up, Michigan, because gas prices are up up up (not that you haven't already noticed)! Filling your tank has become more expensive than buying a front-row ticket to a Taylor Swift concert, and a whole lot less entertaining. To save us from having to trade our cars for literal horses, the Governor has taken action. Let's see what's going on!
Here are Five Fast Facts on the effort to reduce gas prices in Michigan:
- 👈 The Blame Game - Governor Whitmer pointed to a combo of tariffs and the Iran War as driving gas prices through the roof lately. At the moment, gas is an average of $3.89 per gallon, almost a dollar more than a year ago! Road trips apparently require selling a kidney first now.
- 🤔 Different Path - Some states are enacting a gas tax holiday, where the state stops charging tax on gas purchases...but not Michigan! Instead, Gov. Whitmer signed an Executive Order to allow gas stations to sell a gas blend that is much more budget-friendly, saving about $0.10-$0.20 per gallon.
- 👀 Vaporizing Requirements - The move follows a temporary waiver from the EPA to ease pricey blend requirements across the country. There's even a 24-hour hotline (800-MDA-FUEL) if you see any funny business - like price gouging - at the pumps.
- 🍗 The Big Eight - The order only applies to eight busy counties (Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and a few more), covering about half the drivers in the state. With these savings, they can now probably afford a chicken nugget! Just one, though, with no sauce.
- ⛰️ The Rest Of The Story - Drivers outside this area are already allowed to sell the cheaper gas blend without getting a waiver. And everyone can try to find long hills to coast down, too.
🔥Bottom line: Governor Whitmer's order gives some immediate relief to the wallet, which is something we always love to see. We'd rather not go broke just trying to drive to the grocery store for a gallon of milk!
Is this the right move, or would an actual gas tax holiday be a better route?
