Did you see someone threw a molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s house? 😲🍹 We guess you could say that AI is really blowing up these days! 🙃
OK, we don’t support violence. ❌ But we *do* support getting to the root of any and all AI happenings, especially when it impacts American taxes and paychecks. 💰 How is the data center boom (pun intended) shaking out in Nevada? Here’s the latest. 👇
Here’s Five Fast Facts on data centers and Nevada’s economy:
- 👩🏻💻 Fresh Start - Nevada came out of the ‘07-’09 economic crisis looking for a reset. Data centers, which were spreading across the West, looked like a chance to bring in new investment and jobs. So in 2015, lawmakers introduced major tax breaks to attract them.
- 🕺 Break Dance - Fast forward roughly ten years and data centers are now central to the AI boom. However, not everyone is convinced the benefits outweigh the cost. To date, Nevada has handed out about $457 million in tax breaks, and the return is now under a microscope.
- 🎭 Yays and Nays - The debate comes down to trade-offs. Supporters point to job growth and new tax revenue, while critics highlight the relatively small number of jobs tied to large incentives. They also question the environmental cost of running these facilities.
- 😶🌫️ Murky Math - Getting a clear answer isn’t easy. The state mainly relies on projections instead of tracking real results, and job data is limited. What can be measured is the cost, with more than $537 million in tax revenue lost over the past eight years.
- 🍋 Worth the Squeeze? - Nevada approved 15 data center abatements (AKA tax breaks that reduce or eliminate certain taxes) tied to about 70 sites, but the role that played is still unclear. Studies from other states tell very different stories, with some saying 90% of projects relied on incentives and others suggesting most would have happened anyway.
🔥Bottom line: It would be nice if the peeps making these incentives had a way to uhhh, track whether or not they’re working? Someone get these guys a calculator. Got a burning question about your taxes? If you call the IRS, you might be on hold for…awhile. There’s a staffing shortage and the fallout could impact everything from customer service to when you’ll get your refund. Read all about it here.
