Deadliest Cities in the US? Ohio's Got 5 of Them

When most people think of Ohio, they think of...corn and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But should they be thinking of...murders?! 🥷😱

Five of Ohio's most well-known cities made it on a recent list of the country's most deadliest cities. That's not something officials are bragging about, and they're scheming up a plan of action. 📋

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the story:

  1. 🔫 Top Five - Dayton ranked as the nation’s fifth deadliest city, followed by Cleveland at #10, Cincinnati at #19, Akron at #49, and Toledo at #57.
  2. 📈 Survey Says - Murder rates were compared in 65 major U.S. cities with over 100,000 residents. They used the FBI’s 2019 Crime in the United States data, which is the latest available. They also used data from local city police forces and the U.S. Census Bureau.
  3. 🙈 Stay Strapped in Dayton - Dayton experienced a 30% increase in the number of homicides from 2018 to 2019.
  4. ⚠️ Safety Dance - The state of Ohio is now making public safety a priority. They've made over $100 million in grants available to local law enforcement.
  5. ⚖️ Bail Me Out - The Ohio Chamber of Commerce got involved this year. They proposed a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would require judges to consider public safety when setting bail.

🔥Bottom line: Having so many of the deadliest cities in your state is no bueno. Even with the increase in grant money, there's still a lot of work to be done. But we're happy to see the Buckeye state putting safety at the top of the list! Let's hope these cities fall off the list next time around.
