Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA’s electric bill…bills!:

  1. 🔌 Pricing Power - Pennsylvania officials are trying to find ways to cut electricity costs. A couple of new proposals in the hopper would rely on smarter technology and a more efficient grid to get there. In some cases, people who opt in could see lower monthly bills.
  1. ⚡ Greater Grids - Building new power lines can be pricey and customers usually end up paying for it. One proposal would require utilities to make their current grids more efficient using advanced technology before adding new high-capacity lines. The idea is to keep costs down by using what’s already in place.
  1. 🔆 Savvy Savings - The second bill is all about using smart tech to save energy when demand peaks. It would push utilities to use tools like smart thermostats, rooftop solar and batteries to help balance the grid. This could reduce the need for costly backup power plants.
  1. 🤖 Virtual Reality - This system is called a virtual power plant. It works by linking devices in people’s homes to help manage energy use. Things like smart thermostats and batteries reduce power use during busy times, like summer heat waves. The adjustments are small, so most people won’t even notice.
  2. 💰 Counting the Cost - Electric bills in PA average about $165 a month for most households. That’s based on a rate of 20.17 cents per kWh and typical energy use. Commercial customers pay less per unit, at around 13.02 cents per kWh.
