What’s more patriotic than the Fourth of July? The half of July! Sorry, you had to catch us ridin’ nerdy. 🤓🏍️
Is it time to put more butts in Ohio’s congressional seats? According to a newly-proposed bill, survey says…maybe. 🤔
Here’s Five Fast Facts on adding more lawmakers to the Buckeye State:
- 👥 Packed House - Senate Joint Resolution 1 (SJR 1) just dropped and it aims to add a constitutional amendment to bring on additional lawmakers. The amendment would appear on the November 2026 ballot, would bump the House of Representatives from 99 to 153, and increase Senate seats from 33 to 51.
- 📈 Growing Pains - The bill was introduced based on the last Census data. The population has grown to where the average district size for Ohio Senators is 358,000 and 119,000 for the House. Supporters say more in Congress would help legislators feel more in touch with their districts and offer more of their time.
- ⚖️ Head Count - Right now, the nationwide average population for Senate and House districts is 161,000 and 61,000 respectively. With SJR 1, Ohio’s would be brought down to 232,000 and 77,000.
- 🧾 What’s the Damage? - Ohio has a state budget of roughly $100B. It’s estimated that the bill would cost under tens of millions. Critics say adding more folks into the mix would make “herding the cats together” more difficult, but supporters say more eyes on issues is ultimately a good thing.
- 🤠 Seventh Heaven - The Buckeye State is the seventh most populous in the U.S. It also comes in at number four for the most Senate seats and sixth for House seats. If the bill passes, the changes would go into effect on the first day of 2033.
🔥Bottom line: More peeps to represent the interests of Ohio citizens could be a good thing…that is, if they *truly* represent the people. We’ll keep our eyes on this one.
