Rise and shine! 🌅 It’s interview day. Time to get that dusty suit out of the closet, fire up the ol’ iron, and press yourself some confidence. 👔 A bowl of Wheaties, an ice cold energy drink, and you’re on your way to Hireville. Just make sure that Celsius isn’t a High Noon. 😵
Thinking of flaking on a job interview? Well, if you’re in the Buckeye State, that kind of behavior might soon put you on a list of shame! 🫣
Here’s Five Fast Facts on a newly proposed Ohio bill and job interviews:
- 📜 Love It or List It - House Bill 395 just dropped. Its goal? To create an online list of people who No Call/No Show scheduled interviews. The bill also tasks Ohio’s Department of Job and Family Services with creating and maintaining the list.
- 🫵 Tattle Tales - Supporters of the bill say the list would offer employers protection and hold job seekers and the unemployed accountable. They say skipped interviews cost employers time and money and are a waste of taxpayer dollars.
- ❌ Over the Line - Critics of the bill say Ohio already has laws in place to keep people from gaming the unemployment system. For example, if someone quits a job without good reason or refuses to accept employment offers, they’re restricted from receiving unemployment benefits. They also feel that penalizing job seekers for missed interviews is unfair to those with a real emergency.
- 💼 Job Mob - In June, the Buckeye State’s unemployment rate in June was 4.9%. That’s higher than the national average of 4.1%. As far as labor force participation goes, Ohio’s June rate was 62.7%, a little higher than the national participation rate of 62.3%.
- 💸 Claim to Fame - Each week, thousands of Ohio residents file for unemployment. A total of 54,028 claims were filed from July 27 to August 2.
