Don’t Let These Medicare Slip-Ups Drain Your Wallet

Turning 65 comes with a big burp…oh, excuse us! 🤭Comes with a perk: you finally qualify for Medicare, which usually costs way less than private health insurance. 🎉💵 The catch? Medicare’s confusing, and a simple mistake can cost you big in penalties and surprise bills.

A recent survey found that most folks nearing 65 feel pretty fuzzy on how it all works. A little homework now can save you a lot of money and stress later. 😅 You don’t have to become an expert, just dodge the most common traps (and keep the Tums on hand).

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Medicare mistakes to avoid:

  1. ⏰ On Time - First thing’s first: your Initial Enrollment Period runs for seven months: the three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and the three months after. Sign up late for Part B and you could owe a 10% penalty for every year you waited, often for the rest of your life. Part D has its own late penalty too.
  1. 🧾 We Have Receipts - Medicare is NOT free. Original Medicare comes with real out-of-pocket costs, including a hospital deductible of $1,736 per benefit period and a $283 deductible for Part B, plus 20% of many bills after that. There’s also no cap on what you might pay in a year unless you add extra coverage.
  1. 🤔 Game Plan - Medicare isn’t one-size-fits-all. You can pick Original Medicare (Parts A and B, with the option to add Part D for prescriptions) or Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, which bundles everything together and often tosses in dental and vision. Each path has different costs and trade-offs.
  1. 🩺 Doctor’s Orders - Not every doctor accepts Medicare, and not all of them take the specific plan you might be eyeing. Before you enroll, confirm that your doctors accept Medicare, are taking new Medicare patients, and work with the plan you’re considering.
  1. 🥳 HBD - Pro tip: don’t wait until your birthday month to figure this out. Start at least six months ahead, so you have time to review your meds, your docs, and the care you expect to need. The goal: picking the plan that fits the care you’ll actually use.

🔥Bottom line: Medicare rewards people who do a little planning and punishes those who wing it. Learn your enrollment window, budget for the real out-of-pocket costs, and make sure your doctors are on board before you sign up. A few hours of research now can save you thousands down the road.
