One of the spiciest takes on education funding is about to get real. The Education Freedom Tax Credit, a new program passed into law in 2025, is set to launch in January of next year. The final rules were recently released, so let's get educated about it!
Here are Five Fast Facts on a huge change to education funding:
- 🔍 The Change - The program creates a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for individuals ($3,400 for married couples filing jointly), for donations to nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations. Those SGOs will fund things like private school tuition, books and supplies for public school students, and homeschooling needs. Uncle Sam will reimburse the SGOs.
- ⏳ The Timing - The program launches January 1 (after a 60-day comment period), and governors have until then to decide whether to opt in. States that are "in" have until February 15 to submit their lists of SGOs. Tick tock!
- 👍 The Benefits - Officials estimate as many as 2.2 million annual scholarships will be given by 2030, and say about 96% of kids in participating states would be eligible. That's a lot of younglings being covered!
- 💥 The Spice - The program may cost around $26 billion annually. Public school advocates worry it will steer government money away from state-funded public schools toward private ones. Some say that's exactly the point.
- 🤔 The Decision - Governors who decline to opt in could lose millions of dollars in federal funding for their states, so opting out is a choice with both a political and financial price tag.
🔥Bottom line: The goal is to give families more educational options, but the real test will be whether those options help all students without leaving public schools in the lurch. Either way, school choice has officially entered the tax code, and it's a whole new educational world!
