Energy Savings Hacks: Holiday Lights Edition

These Christmas displays are getting out of hand this year. Did we just drive by an inflatable Diddy party? Ho, Ho, Ho indeed! 😵🫣

With energy costs on the rise, we don’t blame you for cutting back on the glow this year. 🕯️But if you still wanna deck those halls (and bushes), here’s how to keep your utility bill low (while spreading good cheer)! 💡

Here’s Five Fast Facts on holiday lights savings hacks:

  1. 🎄 Night Lights - Despite sky-high utility bills, many Americans are still committed to lighting up the front yard. According to a recent survey, two-thirds of U.S. households will power up their electric holiday decor.
  1. ⚡ LED ‘Er Rip - First savings tip: swap out incandescent lights for LEDs. You’ll spend a little more up front ($6 for 100 LEDs vs $3 for 100 incandescents), but you’ll drastically cut utility costs. It costs roughly $84 a season to run old-school bulbs compared to $10.50 for LED. Bonus: the LEDs last 16x longer.
  1. 🌞 Sun-Powered Fun - If your house gets a decent amount of direct sunlight, consider using solar-powered holiday nights. Not only do they stay off your utility bill, they don’t require bulky extension cords, either.
  1. ⛄ Float On - Need more ways to whittle down energy costs? Keep an eye on those inflatable decorations. If you have one with a 250-watt motor, it’ll use as much energy as 50 strands of LED lights. Don’t forget we usually run kitchen appliances and heating up in the winter, too.
  1. ⏲️ Set It and Forget It - Can’t part with that inflatable Frosty the Snowman?  At least put that bad boy on a timer. Especially if you’re the type that forgets to turn him off before hitting the sack. Look for smart plugs that let you control everything from your phone.

🔥Bottom line: With these holiday hacks, you don’t have to skimp on the twinkle! And if you’ve got a winning light display this year, we’d love to see a pic. Not to bring down the mood, but some employers aren’t waiting for the new year to make cuts. In this article, we break down recent stats on holiday layoffs. Bah, humbug!
