Expanded Access To Funds For Trade Schools

Nebraska lawmakers recently looked at college prices and said, “Yikes…what if we tried NOT bankrupting everyone?” So they came up with a plan: let people use education savings money for trade schools, too. Because apparently, not everyone dreams of paying $30,000 a year to write essays about Shakespeare when they could be fixing engines, welding stuff, or becoming the hero who saves everyone when the AC breaks in July.

Here are Five Fast Facts on Nebraska expanding access to funds for trade school students:

  1. 💰 More Access - Bill LB 748 aims to expand access to trade schools by letting families use education savings accounts (like 529 plans) for career training and certification programs. Your savings can now help you become a productive member of society instead of just another stressed-out college freshman.
  1. 🎯 Targeting Immediate Holes - Lawmakers are doing this because there is a massive shortage of key workers like plumbers, electricians, and builders, and apparently, the state is tired of waiting three weeks for someone to fix a leaky sink.
  1. 📈 But Wait There's More - The bill would also double the amount from 529 plans allowed for K-12 education, up to $20k. Arriving early to the party means the party can go longer, amiright?
  1. 🔧 The Jobs We Have - These changes are intended to prepare students for jobs that are both available right now and expected in the future. It's generally good to make sure you have enough people who know how to build things and keep hospitals running!
  1. 👍 Update: Done! - Nebraska lawmakers recently approved the measure with massive support, and was signed into law by Governor Pillen, so it's a done deal! Which is great news, because sometimes bills like this spend years just sitting around like smelly leftovers in the fridge.

🔥Bottom line: In the end, Nebraska’s big idea is pretty simple: not everyone needs a four-year degree to succeed, and maybe we should stop acting like they do. By letting education savings cover trade schools and certification programs, the state is trying to help people jump straight into high-demand jobs without drowning in debt for no reason. It is a win for the students, a win for the schools, and a major win for anyone who eventually needs a professional to come over and figure out why their toilet is making that weird gurgling noise.
