Experts Say Wisconsin Isn’t Prepared for Electric Vehicles

Electric cars are the future, right? They might not be for Wisconsin. Turns out our infrastructure isn’t ready to handle them at all.

Here’s five fast facts about Wisconsin’s Electric Vehicle Problem.

  1. 🚗It’s Electric! - You know that thing where you’re afraid your electric car will run out of power before you can find a place to recharge? That’s called range anxiety. It’s very real up here because Wisconsin doesn’t even have enough charging stations to meet demand for existing vehicles.
  2. 🚘Electric Avenue - To help solve the issue, we’re eligible for up to $79M from the national Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Wisconsin needs to submit a plan by Aug. 1 in order to have access.
  3. 🔌Nothing’s Shocking - The plan requires for the state to install charging stations at least every 50 miles and one mile off every exit on major highways that have been designated as an alternate fuel corridor. WIsconsin currently has 400 charging stations. That’s… not a lot.
  4. 🔋Electrical Storm - Since the state can’t just hand out charging stations like Oprah handed out cars, the state is working on a planning study that’s being paid for by a $1M federal grant. That’s right. They’re actually PLANNING.
  5. I’ve Got the Power - Charging stations need electricity and electricity doesn’t grow on trees, utilities will have to sell it. Again, that hasn’t been figured out. A pair of state bills currently propose allowing private businesses and local governments to sell electricity to drivers.

🔥Bottom line: If Wisconsin wants to join the EV revolution, then these changes have to be made. State and local governments can drag their feet all they want, but it has to happen. The money is out there, but unless they act it’s not going to happen.

What do you think of this plan? Are Electric Vehicles zapping you with excitement?
