America's 250th birthday is the perfect excuse to celebrate the nation's favorite hobby: setting tiny piles of money on fire (beautifully, of course). Every Fourth of July, Americans gather for food, family, and enough colorful explosions to convince neighborhood dogs the sky is officially broken. After 250 years, the tradition is still going strong, and we're here for it!
Here are Five Fast Facts on Independence Day fireworks:
- 💥 It's Historical - We celebrate Independence Day with fireworks because the Founding Fathers envisioned the occasion being marked with celebrations that included "illuminations." Now, 250 years later, Americans have enthusiastically interpreted that to mean, "Let's blow stuff up until someone asks, 'Was that legal?'"
- 🎆 Big Bucks For Big Bangs - Americans spend a whopping $2.2 billion each year on fireworks. That's an impressive amount of cash to literally light on fire! But those few seconds are really sparkly, so it's all good.
- 📈 Going Up - America's fireworks budget has exploded over the years. Sales climbed from about $407 million in 2000 to roughly $2.2 billion today, spiking after 2020, when stuck-at-home citizens decided pyrotechnics were essential pandemic coping mechanisms.
- 🏋️ Heavyweight Haul - Americans burned up an astonishing 322.7 million pounds of fireworks in 2024. That's enough boom to make your neighbor's car alarm celebrate, too.
- 🤦 Don't Be Dumb - Fireworks are fun, but gravity and poor decisions still exist. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recorded over 14k fireworks-related injuries and 15 deaths in 2025, with burns to hands, fingers, faces, and eyes leading the list. Your eyebrows would like you to read the safety instructions, please.
🔥Bottom line: America's 250th birthday proves some traditions never get old. So enjoy the burgers, wave the flag, and marvel at the fireworks...but celebrate safely. Freedom is worth celebrating, as is this great country of ours! Losing your eyebrows over a bottle rocket? Not so much.
