Extending the Commute

When it comes to work, Americans are moving away… from their employers, that is. A new survey shows we’re living greater distances away from our work and it’s led to some interesting results.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Workers Living Farther Away From Their Employers:

  1. 🏠 Farther - Workers now live an average distance of 27 miles from their work, compared to 10 in 2019. Crazy, right?
  2. 🚗 Start Date - You’ve probably already guessed why: the pandemic. Workers hired in or after March 2020 lived 35 miles from their employer, more than twice the distance of those hired before that date.
  3. 🏡 WFH? - Hybrid and remote workers also play a factor. Around 7% of employees worked from home before the pandemic. It’s now at 28%.
  4. 🚘 Way Farther - The pandemic has also increased the number of workers who live an “uncommutable” distance from their work, with 5.5% living more than 50 miles away, which is up from 0.8% in 2019. The rate is higher depending on the industry with 20% of tech workers living 100 or more miles from their employer.
  5. 🧑‍💼Cross Section - Specific demographics, like people in their 30’s, office workers, and higher income earners all tend to work from home or farther away.

🔥Bottom line: The shift is still happening, no matter how hard some employers try to prevent it. More Americans are working from home and they’re suddenly realizing they’re not limited to one area. The real question now is whether or not employers will finally institute policies that allow working from home full time.
