Free Money for Farmers? It’s Not a Bunch of Manure!

Minnesota Farmers are about to have some extra cash on hand to clean up their act. More specifically, they can use that money to help fight pollution while also improving operations on their farms.

Here’s Five Fast Facts about Minnesota’s New Farm Grant Money:

  1. 🚜Green Cash - They can use money from a $20B grant to buy and install new farming technology that eliminates pollution and helps fight off greenhouse gas emissions. The grant is included in the new Inflation Reduction Act.
  2. 🐄Upgrade Ready - The money can be used for things like holding tanks that prevent harmful chemicals from seeping into the ground, and holding areas for manure to reduce pollution and cut costs by making the ground ready for planting. Those are just two examples. The possibilities are limitless!
  3. 🍅But Wait, There’s More - There’s also a $100,000 grant from the McKnight Foundation that helps farmers develop climate-friendly practices to help mitigate climate change, improve farming operations and even provide a new income stream.
  4. 🌽One for Five - The McKnight grant gives farmers a minimum of $1,000 a year for up to five years to apply climate focused practices in their operation, whatever that means.
  5. 🥒Where and When? - Farmers can start applying for the state grants as soon as early 2023, either through the USDA or the state. Applications for the McKnight Grants are now open.

🔥Bottom line: Getting paid to upgrade your farming operation while making the environment a bit better? You can’t beat that! Farmers can often get overlooked when it comes to funding like this, so it’s a smart way to use the money that helps everyone involved.
