Got a case of tipping fatigue? 😴 We’re downright exhausted. As inflation continues to bloat the cost of…everything, it feels like what we’re expected to tip keeps climbing higher. 🧗
The good news is today’s rules for tipping aren’t *that* different from the not-so-distant past. If you need a refresher, have a seat. Class is now in session. 🧑🏫
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the latest tipping etiquette:
- 🥱 #Tired - Fed up with tapping that iPad at the coffee shop? The majority of folks are, too. According to a recent survey, 63% of Americans have at least one negative view on tipping. That’s up from last year’s 59%. Additionally, 41% say things are out of control.
- 🥡 Let’s Eat - Let’s recap where you should be tipping: a sit-down restaurant. Plan on leaving between 15% and 20% of your pre-tax total. Getting DoorDash or GrubHub? Tip your delivery driver at least $5. This goes for grocery delivery, too.
- 🚘 I Get Around - Hopping in a Lyft or Uber? There’s a good chance your driver’s footing the bill for gas. Plan on tipping between 15% and 20%. When traveling, leave your hotel housekeeper around $5 a day. When you check in, tip anyone who carries your stuff. A good rule of thumb is $2 for the first bag and an additional buck for the others.
- 💵 Spin City - When are you allowed to say no? Anytime you’re standing at a counter. They might spin the dreaded iPad around, but you don’t need to leave anything extra. If you really want to, leave a buck or two.
- 🎅 ‘Tis the Season - As the holidays approach, budget how much you want to gift local service providers (mailman, landscapers, hair stylists, etc.). You don’t have to give something to everyone, just those you have a personal relationship with. Don’t forget to include a nice note or card. Need a full holiday tipping breakdown? 🔥Bottom line: From your morning coffee to your evening date night, the tipping fairy pops up everywhere. Don’t feel pressured to add to the jar in places where you really shouldn’t have to.
