Fresh Stats from Ohio School Report Cards

A friend of ours asked his kid why his report card was so wet. 😧💧 His answer? He told his dad that he should have known because all of his grades were below C level. 🤣

No one likes a soggy report card, including Ohioans. The state’s Department of Education just dropped its own report card for the 2024-2025 school year. 🏫 Let’s unpack the details.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Ohio schools:

  1. 💼 #Adulting - How prepared are Ohio kids for the real world? The report card showed that 61.4% of 2024 high school grads met the College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness criteria (up from 2023’s 56.3%). Additionally, 16% of 2024 grads earned at least 12 college credits while in high school, up from 13.8% in 2023.
  1. 🙋🏽‍♀️ Here Ye, Here Ye - Absenteeism was also a report card stand out. Last school year, Ohio schools had the lowest percentage of absences since the pandemic (25.1%). Back in 2022-2023, it hovered around 30%.
  1. 👩🏻‍⚕️ Nurse’s Office - Officials say “targeted interventions” played a role in driving down absenteeism. One helpful initiative is the development of school-based health centers. Right now, there are 138 operational centers and they’ve helped over 70,000 patients.
  2. 🚌 Missing the Bus - While absenteeism is down, one out of every four Ohio students miss roughly 10% of the school year. Students with disabilities are more likely to be absent from school than others.
  3. 🤳 Selfie-Free Zone - What’s on deck for this new school year? Governor DeWine signed off on a requirement for all schools to have a cellphone policy by the first day of 2026. Schools that already have one in place report higher student engagement and better academic performance.

🔥Bottom line: Not too shabby, Ohio schools! Let’s kick off this new school year with a pep in our step. If you’re a working parent, you might rely on childcare for your kiddos. Unfortunately, rising costs and low worker wages make finding a solution that fits pretty difficult. What should America do about it? Check out our hot takes in this article.
