Funding for Clean Up Efforts at Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Wait, bro...did you just fart? ๐Ÿ™Š๐Ÿ’จOh, nevermind. That's just the methane leaking out of the abandoned gas wells at Cuyahoga Valley National Park ๐Ÿ˜.

โ€

But we have good news! The U.S. Department of the Interior is giving the state of Ohio funds to clean up three oil and gas well sites from the park, starting later this year. Because swimming in an oil slick is no bueno.

ย

Hereโ€™s Five Fast Facts on the clean-up efforts :

โ€

  1. ๐Ÿšง Clean Up Crew - Including the wells in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, there are 277 oil and gas wells to clean up nationwide.
  2. ๐Ÿ’ฒ Part of the Plan - The funds going towards the Cuyahoga clean up are part of a larger, $33 million dollar plan to clean up the nation's parks. Other states include California, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and West Virginia.
  3. ๐Ÿ’ฐ Pollution Solution - The $33 million is part of an even BIGGER bill - the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act signed back in November. THAT bill provides $21 billion to get rid of all kinds of leftover pollution, like abandoned mine lands and brownfields.
  4. ๐Ÿ’ฃ What's That Smell?? - These wells have been a problem for a really long time. They cause things like methane leaks in groundwater, create sinkholes, and litter parks with old equipment.
  5. ๐Ÿ’ Not Very Specific - Officials say that the clean up efforts could take anywhere from weeks to months to complete.ย

โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅBottom line: Tidying up these nasty old wells is expensive, but good for the environment. Cuyahoga Valley's a popular park that gets a lot of visitors. And it's good to hear that they're working on making it safe...and methane-free (are you sure you didn't fart??)
