Google Is Your Second Resume

Getting a job in 2026 is no longer just about having a good resume; it's about having TWO good resumes - the one you actually send and the one that the Internet shows about you! Recruiters will often use Google to search candidates’ names before interviews to see what pops up online, so your prospective boss may know more about you than you think before you step into that interview. While you’re trying to look professional, the Internet might still be showing your old posts about sharing cereal for dinner with your cat. It remembers everything like a nosy neighbor with an unlimited global screenshot folder!

Here are Five Fast Facts on how Google is basically your second resume:

  1. 🤔 One Of These Is Not Like The Other - Recruiters often Google candidates (or use AI) specifically to see if their digital presence matches their resume. If your resume says “hardworking professional” but your social media says “professional napper,” that’s awkward.
  1. 🪮 Be Professional - LinkedIn is key. Almost 90% of recruiters and HR professionals use LinkedIn during hiring. Basically, LinkedIn is now the online version of combing your hair for picture day.
  1. 📱 Socially Consistent - Recruiters also often check your social media posts, not only to see if you're a good cultural fit but also to see if your work-related posts align with the skills on your resume. Do you really want them to see those pics of that New Year's rager? And if you say you love technology but keep posting about losing fights with your printer, that ain't great.
  1. 🕸️ It's Who You Know - Some companies may look at who you are connected and interact with online because it reflects your judgment and professional network. The internet has basically become one giant group project nobody can escape.
  1. 🔍 Google Thyself - Pro tip: Google yourself at least once a year to see what employers might find. Old accounts and embarrassing photos can hide everywhere, so this gives you a chance to clean up before things get...let's say…vocationally complicated.

🔥Bottom line: In today's awful job market, it's all too easy to torch your own chances with unforced errors. Recruiters are checking much more than your resume now, so you need to think bigger on how your online world presents itself. Just remember: if you wouldn't show it to your grandma, you probably shouldn't show it to the person who sends your paycheck.
