We’ve all heard about the Great Resignation, but lots of other folks are losing their jobs, shall we say…involuntarily…for one reason or another. There’s a great program out there that can help those folks.
Here are Five Fast Facts about the Dislocated Worker Program:
- 1️⃣First Up - If the worst has happened to you, first apply for unemployment benefits. It’s temporary and less income than your job…but it’s something! Go to esd.wa.gov/unemployment on a PC or laptop (no phones or tablets) and get it done. Like, now. Seriously, right now. Stop reading and do it (but then come back and read some more).
- 2️⃣Second Step - If you lose your job due to layoffs, reorganizations, the closure or sale of a business, or your skills no longer being needed, you might also be considered a “dislocated worker.” But fear not: this dislocation is a good thing!
- 💵🎓What’s In It For Me? A federal program provides funds at no cost to dislocated workers. This money can be used for a wide range of help, including job searches, training or completion of a diploma or degree, career counseling, resume/interview help, transportation costs, childcare, or even new tools or clothing. In other words, there are more uses than 420 (which you should definitely avoid if you’re looking for a job).
- 🙋How Do I Get Started? To get this ball rolling, visit your local WorkSource center or WorkSourceWA.com online and see how they can help you. Remember, no 420!
- 👍No Shame In That Game - In 2020, almost 50k Washingtonians used this program to get back on their feet, and over 60% of them had a new job within a year after being laid off. Bouncin’ back like a Super Bouncy Ball!
🔥Bottom line: While layoffs always suck, they are an unfortunate part of life. But knowing how to bounce back and regain a good Paycheck as fast as you can is crucial. Knowledge is a large part of the battle, and now you’ve got it…though we hope you never actually need to use it!
Have you gone through layoffs before? How did you bounce back?
