Grants Issued For Apprenticeship Training in Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan just dropped a bag of money to help people learn how to do actual work through apprenticeship programs. From building houses to fixing wires, these programs are for future experts who actually know which way a screwdriver turns. Let's see what's happening!

Here are Five Fast Facts on apprenticeship grants in Northern Michigan:

  1. 🪛 The Purpose - The idea here is to help hundreds of new apprentices get their start in high-demand jobs like construction, manufacturing, and health care. You know, jobs that are hiring real people instead of asking for “10 years of experience” for an entry-level position paying in leftover pizza coupons.
  1. 💰 The Money - The state of Michigan handed out $4 million in total grant funds, which is enough money to buy a lot of hammers or maybe just one very nice castle in the woods.
  1. 🧑‍💼 The Origin - The money comes from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, which is a very long name for the group of people who want to make sure you have a job when you grow up.
  1. 🤝 Helping Hands - These grants have gone to 13 different organizations across Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula to help them train the next generation of workers. They'll get industry recognized credentials and key skills...while getting a paycheck!
  1. 👍 Track Record - These programs work well, with 94% of registered apprentices across Michigan still being employed a year after finishing training. Even better, their median salary is over $80k! These apprentices are making bank while some college grads are still arguing with printers at unpaid internships.

🔥Bottom line: Northern Michigan is setting the stage for a future where more folks know how to fix their own sink or build a sturdy bookshelf, and certainly can make a good living doing it. If it works, it'll also help fill in some much-needed gaps in the job market. Ultimately, it's a bet that hands-on learning is the secret sauce to a better economy for the state and a better future for its residents. We’re here for it!
