Fears of a robot takeover and looming layoffs have many Americans reconsidering a job move…even if they’ve got a terrible boss. 👺 And yep, even if Karen from accounting is still heating up fishy leftovers in the breakroom. 🤢♨️
The new trend of hanging onto a gig well past its prime has legs. Let’s walk through it together, shall we? 🚶
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the job hugging trend:
- 💼 The Stay Play - Americans are staying put in their jobs more than they have in years. Recent data shows worker turnover (including people quitting or getting laid off) has slowed sharply as economic uncertainty grows. The turnover rate fell to 5.8% in January, the lowest in nine years.
- 🫂 Gimmie A Hug - This “job hugging” pattern is especially common among white-collar workers in industries like finance, technology, and business services. Those sectors are also among the most affected by AI changes in hiring, with some companies saying artificial intelligence played a role in recent layoffs.
- 🥴 AI Anxiety - AI is shaking up the job market in different ways. It’s creating new opportunities in some areas while automating certain office tasks in others. That uncertainty is helping spark new interest in blue-collar careers among younger workers.
- 📖 Lessons Learned - The job market today looks very different from the pandemic-era “Great Resignation,” when workers were quitting jobs at record rates and employers were scrambling to hire. After that hiring surge, companies are now moving more cautiously with both hiring and layoffs.
- 👊 Roll With the Punches - AI may be shaking up the job market, but experts say the sky probably isn’t falling. History tells us new tech has created new industries and jobs even as they replaced some roles. With the U.S. economy cranking out over 30M new jobs each year, AI is expected to reshape work, not totally end it.
🔥Bottom line: AI’s still a pretty new thing in our universe and us humans are still in an adjustment phase. Call it wishful thinking, but we don’t think it’ll be a doomsday.
