Check it out: St. Paul has launched a lead-free pipe campaign that replaces residents’ lead pipes at no cost. There’s no catch. No more lead pipes. Col. Mustard is not happy.
Here’s Five Fast Facts About St. Paul’s Lead Pipe Program:
- 🚰Lead Pipes? - Apparently they’re still a thing in St. Paul. An estimated 26,000 homes still have them and they’re largely in economically depressed areas.
- 💰Why Now? - In the past, replacing lead pipes would cost homeowners $6,000. You can see why some residents couldn’t afford it.
- 🚱How Much? - A federal grant has given the city $14M that will completely cover the replacement cost.
- 🪠How Do I Sign Up? - There’s no need. The city has already been divided into zones and they’ve already started. If you don’t want to wait, you can replace your pipes at your own cost, but you will not be reimbursed. The city will still replace the public lead line for free.
- 🚧When Does It Start? - The program will be spread over the next 10 years. The campaign started with 600 homes, and a total of 1,500 will be completed by the end of 2023. If you are concerned about lead in your water, the State has set an informational site here.
🔥Bottom line: Living without lead pipes isn’t something everyone can afford, so it’s good to see the city is taking care of its citizens.
