How To Plan A Summer Roadtrip

A great road trip doesn't just happen. It takes planning, safety checks, budgeting, and at least one passenger asking, “Are we there yet?” before you've even left the driveway. If you're wondering how to plan a fun trip, avoid turning your vehicle into a roadside lawn ornament, and keep your vacation from becoming a very expensive lesson in poor decision-making, we've got your back with these great tips!

Here are Five Fast Facts on creating a great summer road trip:

  1. 🚗 Vehicle Verification - Before blasting your favorite road-trip playlist, give your vehicle a health check (or have your mechanic do it). The NHTSA recommends checking tires, fluid levels, batteries, lights, belts, hoses, and even windshield wipers. Tire tread should be at least 2/32 of an inch deep, and make sure the inflation is right. Your tires should not be making retirement plans before your trip starts.
  1. 🌹 Smell The Roses - The route is the heart of a successful road trip! Instead of driving nonstop like you're escaping a zombie invasion, plan realistic travel days, schedule interesting stops, and leave room for flexibility. The journey is supposed to be part of the vacation - not just the loading screen before the destination.
  1. 💲 Budget Matters - Think ahead about fuel, lodging, food, attractions, and unexpected expenses. Without a budget, your "cheap getaway" can quickly transform into a "why is my credit card crying?" getaway (but without any actual luxury).
  1. 🆘 SHTF Kit - Pack an emergency kit because cars have a remarkable ability to break down at the worst possible moment. Include essentials such as a phone charger, first-aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, tire gauge, jack, water, food, and maps. Basically, prepare like you're heading into the wilderness even if you're just going to see the World's Largest Ball of Twine.
  1. 👍 Safety Patrol Says - Safety rules never take a vacation! Everyone should wear seat belts, children should ride in appropriate car seats, drivers should avoid texting, obey speed limits, and never drive impaired. Also remember that a child's body temperature rises 3-5 times faster than an adult's, making hot cars extremely dangerous. The only thing that should be left in a parked car is your collection of old fast-food napkins.

🔥Bottom line: The perfect road trip is equal parts preparation, flexibility, and common sense. Check your ride, plan your route, watch your budget, pack for emergencies, and drive safely. Do all that, and you'll spend your vacation making memories instead of explaining to a tow-truck driver how your adventure went sideways 50 miles from nowhere.
