The Minnesota government is building its legal weed infrastructure with a series of open positions that include the head of the newly-formed Office of Cannabis Management. Are you qualified to apply?
Here’s Five Fast Facts About Minnesota Pot Experts:
- 😶🌫️ Inhale - The office is responsible for regulating the state’s cannabis market as well as the expungement of low-level marijuana convictions. If you think that sounds easy, you must be high.
- 🚬 Medicinal - The director of the OCM will be in charge of “promoting health and welfare” and “protecting public safety.” That’s not the slightest bit vague, especially when it comes to marijuana. They’ll also have to put together the process for licensing, sales, and regulation.
- 🌿 Green Market - The office will also be in charge of eliminating the marijuana black market and “meeting market demand” for weed. Get your grow operation ready!
- 📅 M-Day - The job posting goes live July 1 and will remain open for 30 days before they even start choosing candidates to interview. I’m pretty sure you can’t toke up while on the job, though.
- 😮💨Exhale - “But wait,” you might say, “If weed goes legal on August 1 and they can’t start interviewing until that same day, who’s running things?” That’s a good question. The state will have someone temporarily in charge of the regulation and oversight.
🔥Bottom line: Since they’ve repeatedly said they don’t expect dispensaries set up until 2025, there will be some time to get things up and running, rather than a mad dash. Still, it’s not going to be easy and the position is going to be thankless. But before you get your resume dusted off, bear in mind you’re going to need a lot of legal and government experience to run this office. “I love pot” isn’t necessarily the main qualification they’re looking for.
