Fellas, we know you wanna pull out all the stops to impress your date. Flowers, candy, a sweet treat before (and after) dinner? 💐🍧 But…if you’re putting it all on plastic, think twice.
A recent NerdWallet survey spilled all the hot tea on what gives Americans the financial ick in relationships. Spoiler alert: it’s those high credit card balances. 💳 Keep reading for all the juicy stats!
Here’s Five Fast Facts on debt and relationships:
- 📊 Survey Says - In the survey, 10% of Americans said they’d never date a person with credit card debt. Younger generations feel more strongly about this than the old heads. Out of the Zoomers surveyed, 15% would pass on a debt-y dater and so would 13% of millennials. Gen X felt a little less bothered (7%) as did Boomers (6%).
- 📉 In the Red - Most Americans would date someone in debt, but there’s a limit. According to the survey, that number’s around $20K. However, 40% said that no amount of credit card debt is a dealbreaker in a relationship. Someone let us know if there’s a debt filter on Tinder.
- 👩❤️👨 Honeymoon’s Over - When it comes to those already snuggled up, it’s a bit of a different story. The survey showed 39% of Americans surveyed said they don’t care how much debt their partner has. Additionally, 77% said that student loan debt doesn’t matter.
- 💔 Just the Fib - Thinking about lying about your debt to win over that hottie? The survey showed 67% of Americans would stop dating someone who did. Bro, keep it honest…she’s gonna find out eventually.
- 💡 What’s the Plan? - While debt is a dating turn off for some Americans, having a plan could change things. According to the survey, 76% said consumer debt isn’t a problem as long as the person had a payoff plan in place.
