Is Spirit Airlines Closing Up Shop?

Girl, this week has felt like a whole month. 🥴 We are in desperate need of a last minute getaway. Let’s spend the rent on a trip to Ibiza. 💸🍸 Is YOLO still a thing…in this economy?

Spirit Airlines is a vacation staple for flying families on a budget. However, the company isn’t doing too hot. 😵‍💫 Are we about to say goodbye to America’s affordable flight giant?

Here’s Five Fast Facts on what’s happening with Spirit Airlines:

  1. ✈️ That’s The Spirit - Spirit Airlines just dropped their latest quarterly filing and things aren’t looking too good. If the company doesn’t beef up profits, it could go out of business within the next 12 months. Spirit also declared bankruptcy earlier this year.
  1. 📉 Flight Risk - Why did things go south? American leisure travel tanked in Q2, causing pricing challenges. Less than ideal market conditions and uncertain business operations are expected to roll on through the end of the year.
  1. 🩹 Band Aid - To try to turn the ship around, Spirit plans to add more premium seating, since demand in that area is more stable. They also plan on redoing their route network, laying off roughly 270 pilots, and possibly selling off some aircraft and gate capacity.
  1. 🔒 Use Protection - If you have a booked Spirit flight coming up in the near future, there’s no need to panic. However, if you plan on booking a flight with Spirit down the road, look into picking up some travel insurance. You’ll wanna cover your butt if the plug gets pulled.
  1. 💰 Highs and Lows - How would Spirit closing impact the airline industry overall? In general, low-cost airlines help keep ticket prices down. Other airlines adjust their prices to compete, which is in consumers’ favor. If Spirit goes away, flights could get pricey.

🔥Bottom line: The thought of Spirit fading away and the cost of flights skyrocketing makes us wanna crawl in a hole. Anyone feel like starting up a new low cost airline? Anyone?! Speaking of flights, Southwest’s new seat policy has some people up in arms. Head here to find out if it’s just another money grab.
