It Could Be Worse

In the wake of the ongoing Iran War, gas prices continue to pummel our wallets. It's bad everywhere, but in some places it's worse than others. Fortunately for Georgians, we're one of the "others" due to some quick action by lawmakers and Gov. Kemp. Check out the good news!

Here are Five Fast Facts on gas prices in Georgia:

  1. 💨 Gas Tax Gone - On March 20, Georgia suspended its $0.33/gallon gas tax for 60 days. And poof! We all got a discount.
  1. ☕ Buy Gas, Save A Coffee - The gas tax break could save drivers roughly $5-$6 per fill up for a typical car. It's like getting a free coffee! Well, almost.
  1. 💰 Big Bucks - Georgia is giving up about $360–$400 million in gas tax revenue during the suspension, basically saying, “We’ll cover it from savings.” See what a little fiscal responsibility can let you do?
  1. 👀 But Wait, There's More - The law also includes one-time tax rebate payments up to $500 for eligible taxpayers, meaning literal cash back in people’s pockets.
  1. 😁 Happy Trend - Since the law passed, the price of gas in Georgia has leveled out (currently still around $3.72/gallon), but the national average keeps inching upward (currently around $4.14/gallon).

🔥Bottom line: Keep in mind, the longer the Iran War goes on, the less likely prices will be to stay "low." But, we'll take whatever relief we can get, right? Supporters say it’s helpful during tough times, while critics argue it’s more like putting duct tape on a busted bumper. Either way, for at least a few weeks, Georgians get to feel like they’re winning every time they fill up. Well, kind of.
