Companies are looking for a few (translation: a LOT of) good people to fill some key jobs! These jobs aren't flashy, but the paychecks are. You can't replace an electrician with a motivational poster or convince an airplane to repair itself with positive thinking, so people who can do hard things are at a premium. Is this something you can take advantage of?
Here are Five Fast Facts on skilled trade jobs:
- 😟 Big Shortages - Employers in construction, electrical work, and aviation are struggling to find trained workers, while retirements slim the ranks and big projects get bigger. The people who knew which wire goes where are exiting the workforce, and they are not leaving a map!
- 📈 Wide Open - A recent McKinsey report predicts that in the next three years we'll see a shortage of roughly 60k aviation technicians, and the National Association of Home Builders estimates a shortage of 2.2 million new construction workers. That's a lot of hard hats without heads.
- ⚡ Healthy Paychecks - Skilled trades jobs can pay $60k to $90k annually (sometimes more). That's a great paycheck for people who know their way around complex machinery, when most of us don't even know how to turn off the breaker!
- 🤖 Not Today, AI - Skilled trades are also much less vulnerable to AI replacement. At least until Skynet starts manufacturing T100s, that is.
- 👍 Getting In - The path to a skilled job is probably right in front of you. Companies like Home Depot often have free training programs, community college programs are usually low cost, and apprenticeships often pay good money while you learn.
🔥Bottom line: If you're staring numbly at a spreadsheet (or endlessly scrolling LinkedIn) and wondering what else is out there, good news! Trades are desperately looking for you and paying good money! Grab a wrench, skip the tuition, and let the retirees enjoy their pina coladas while you make bank.
