Arizona summers aren’t for the faint of heart! 🥵 Add in some of the priciest gas in the country, with the state average sitting just under $4 a gallon in early July, and a cool vacation might feel out of reach.💸 The good news? You don’t have to go far or spend a ton to beat the heat!
From pine forests to red rock creeks, Arizona is full of sweet escapes that cost just a few bucks to enjoy.🌲🚙 Most of these spots are a short drive from Phoenix or Tucson, so you can trade triple-digit heat for mountain air without booking a flight. Let's load up the car and check out five of our faves.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on Arizona road trips:
- 🏜️ Ain’t Life Grand? - No AZ road trip list is complete without the big one. Grand Canyon National Park charges $35 per car, which covers everyone inside for a full week. The South Rim sits around 7,000 feet up, so it stays cooler than the desert below, and the views are hard to beat.
- 🌲 Flagstaff Cool Down - Just two hours north of Phoenix, Flagstaff trades cactus for tall pines and mountain air. Summer highs here sit in the 80s while Phoenix bakes past 105, so packing a light jacket is smart. Stroll the historic Route 66 downtown, which costs nothing but a little gas to reach.
- 🛝 Red Rock N’ Roll - In Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona, Slide Rock State Park is a natural water park carved into red sandstone. For about $20 to $30 a car, you can zip down an 80-foot rock slide into cold, clear creek water. Bring water shoes and get there early, because the lot fills fast on summer weekends.
- 🍋 Lemmon Life - Near Tucson, Mount Lemmon is a "sky island" that rises more than 9,000 feet above the desert. The drive up the Catalina Highway is free, and the top runs 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the city below. Don’t miss the tiny mountain town of Summerhaven for a giant cookie and some pine-scented air.
- 🌉 London Bridge, the Remix - Fun fact: Lake Havasu City is home to the real London Bridge, shipped over from England and rebuilt stone by stone in 1971! It gets hot here in summer, but the lake is made for swimming, kayaking, and cooling off. London Bridge Beach is free to visit, with a swim area, shade, and picnic spots.
🔥Bottom line: Beating the Arizona heat doesn’t require a plane ticket or a fancy resort. With a full tank and a cooler full of snacks and sips, you can reach pine forests, red rock creeks, a mile-high canyon, or a cool mountain town in just a few hours. Pick a path and chase the shade!
