Woah! Froedtert South Hospital in Kenosha is closing their ER for good. Can they do that? Where will people go? What’s going on?
Here’s Five Fast Facts About Kenosha’s ER Closure:
- 🏥Why Is It Closing? - Froedert leadership says the ER isn’t equipped to handle most emergency situations. Which would make it just an “R.” They also said the lack of private ambulances needed to transfer patients to nearby Pleasant Prairie was another factor.
- 🚑Where Will People Go? - Pleasant Prairie. It’s 20 minutes from downtown Kenosha. Kenosha Emergency Services will now be responsible for transport to Pleasant Prairie. Don’t bleed out.
- 🚑Don’t People Need Help? - Froedert says the ER saw around 60 patients a day, with only about 5% of them needing actual emergency services. Those services require a transfer to, you guessed it, Pleasant Prairie.
- 👨⚕️What Are They Thinking? - Their current plan is to convert the ER to an urgent care facility.
- 👩⚕️Can They Do This? - Absolutely. Most hospitals, including Froedert, are privately owned. The ambulances Froedtert uses are also private. Capitalism at work!
🔥Bottom line: Healthcare in the US is largely a business. Unless things change, no one is entitled to it under our current model. Decisions like this are going to be based on money rather than access or actual service. Froedert is doing what’s best for business.
